Kolkata Knight Riders' playoff hopes are no longer in their hands after losing to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2020 clash in Dubai.

Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in a tense match and this has stalled the playoff hopes of Eoin Morgan’s side. The win allowed Mumbai Indians to become the first team to seal their spot in the playoffs while Kings XI Punjab’s path has become easier. For Kolkata Knight Riders, their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are now out of their hands and they will have to depend upon other results.

Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders on the last ball of the match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The defeat for Eoin Morgan’s team has now taken their chances of directly qualifying for the playoffs out of their hands and they will now have to depend upon other results for their progress. The loss for Kolkata Knight Riders meant that Mumbai Indians became the first team in IPL 2020 to seal their spot in the playoffs. The situation regarding the other spots could be determined by Friday when Kings XI Punjab take on Rajasthan Royals.

KL Rahul’s team are in fourth spot currently but a big win against Rajasthan Royals could boost them to the second spot. If Kings XI Punjab win, then Rajasthan Royals are out of the playoff race. This would leave only Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders technically as the other teams in the fray for the playoffs. However, if Kings XI Punjab win big, then the likes of Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore will be under immense pressure heading into their last two games. Delhi Capitals, in particular, are in a vulnerable position after their big loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad which has dented their net run-rate.

Teams Matches Wins Losses Points Net Run Rate
Mumbai Indians (Q) 12 8 4 16 1.186
Royal Challengers Bangalore 12 7 5 14 0.048
Delhi Capitals 12 7 5 14 0.03
Kings XI Punjab 12 6 6 12 -0.049
Kolkata Knight Riders 13 6 7 12 -0.467
Sunrisers Hyderabad 12 5 7 10 0.396
Rajasthan Royals 12 5 7 10 -0.505
Chennai Super Kings 13 5 8 10 -0.532
