Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders on the last ball of the match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The defeat for Eoin Morgan’s team has now taken their chances of directly qualifying for the playoffs out of their hands and they will now have to depend upon other results for their progress. The loss for Kolkata Knight Riders meant that Mumbai Indians became the first team in IPL 2020 to seal their spot in the playoffs. The situation regarding the other spots could be determined by Friday when Kings XI Punjab take on Rajasthan Royals.
KL Rahul’s team are in fourth spot currently but a big win against Rajasthan Royals could boost them to the second spot. If Kings XI Punjab win, then Rajasthan Royals are out of the playoff race. This would leave only Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders technically as the other teams in the fray for the playoffs. However, if Kings XI Punjab win big, then the likes of Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore will be under immense pressure heading into their last two games. Delhi Capitals, in particular, are in a vulnerable position after their big loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad which has dented their net run-rate.
