It is a privilege if someone manages to match a record set by Virat Kohli. The Indian cricket team skipper and captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise has set plenty of records in his career and he is acknowledged as one of the modern-day greats of the tournament. Recently, during the game between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, Robin Uthappa, who played before Kohli has broken his record although it is not for the right reasons.

Following Rajasthan Royals’ loss to Kolkata Knight Riders, Robin Uthappa now has the most losses by an individual in the history of the Indian Premier League. The loss against Kolkata Knight Riders was the 91st in Robin Uthappa’s IPL career. Before this, Virat Kohli had the most losses with 90 while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Robin Uthappa began his career with Royal Challengers Bangalore and he has gone on to play for franchisees like Sahara Pune Warriors, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. It was his stint with Kolkata Knight Riders that proved to be the most fruitful. In 2014, he scored 660 runs at an average of 44 and played a big part in Kolkata Knight Riders’ second IPL triumph. In IPL 2020, he was purchased for Rs 3 crore by Rajasthan Royals.

‘Not-so-elite’ company

Robin Uthappa tops the list but he also has good company although not for the right reasons. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Dinesh Karthik and Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma occupy the 3rd and the 4th spot in the list with 87 and 85 defeats, respectively.

It was a bad day in general for Robin Uthappa in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders as he was caught applying saliva to the ball. This practice has now been banned by the ICC and all other boards due to the current coronavirus pandemic.

The incident took place on the fifth ball of the third over of KKR’s innings. Riders' opener Sunil Narine - in an attempt to clear mid-on - lofted the ball which went straight to Uthappa’s hands. It was an easy catch, but he ended up dropping it.

After giving Narine a lifeline, Uthappa was seen applying saliva on the ball before handing it to the bowler. This unintentional mistake might land him in trouble if the authorities slap him with a fine.
