The brain is the most important and delicate part of the human body. Any instance of headache for a long period is a sign of danger as these could be a signal for development of brain tumor. This apart, long-time use of mobile phones increases the risk of brain tumor. As per estimates every year more than 2,500 children are at the risk of developing brain tumour.

“A primary brain tumor is a tumor which begins in the brain tissue,” Dr KK Bansal Senior Neurosurgeon at Narayana Hospital said. “In children, this disease is caused due to gene infections. When a child is in the mother’s womb any medicine taken by the mother during the first three months of pregnancy and the last three months of pregnancy, including the effect of the radiation or environmental disorder can lead to damage of genes. The child,  may develop tumor which starts to show its symptoms only after a few years. Due to this and due to genetic reasons, this disease is increasing in children these days,” he added.

“The symptoms of brain tumor depend on their size, type and location,” said Dr SP Patidar, senior neurologist at Jeevan Rekha Hospital.

Surgery to remove the tumor is the first option. However, some tumors, because of their location, can’t be surgically removed. Such tumors are treated with Gamma Knife Therapy, a form of highly focused radiation therapy.
