Entire process would nearly take 45 days to wind up one side of the road

Traffic between Chandpole and Choti Chaupar in the Walled City area of the city will remain diverted for a couple of months as work commences for Smart Road. As part of the Smart City project, a multi-utility duct will be laid along the road length, for the purpose one side of the road will remain closed for excavation. This is expected to further complicate the parking and traffic scenario along the busy market area.

In order to lessen the traffic snarls, the Smart City officials have planned to perform the work in batches of 100 meters, blocking one side of the road at a time. Parking will not be allowed in the area near the worksite to prevent traffic congestion.

The local residents and shopkeepers are meanwhile little anxious with the development work as it is expected to take nearly 45 days to complete one side of the road. Adding to the concern of the authorities are also 5 temples located along the road.

“We have informed the officials regarding our concern for the safety of the temples and have been assured that the religious places will not be disturbed,” says official at a local resident organisation.

The Walled City area of Jaipur remains a center for city’s heritage and commercial activity. The traditional markets of the area attract a large number of local and foreign visitors and remain busy for most of the day.

However, for past few years, traffic in the area has been sharing road space with development activities, earlier the laying of Jaipur metro and more recently, the Smart City works have kept the roads obstructed for multiple duration. This time though, the Smart City officials intend to hold most of the activity in night hours to cause the minimum interruption in the daily routine.
