The consultancy firm appointed to review the DPR in a recently submitted traffic study has suggested JLN Marg as an alternate route.

The Jaipur Metro phase 2 might take a route off the previously proposed Tonk Road as JMRC advances to review the detailed project report. The consultancy firm appointed to review the DPR in a recently submitted traffic study has suggested JLN Marg as an alternate route. However, officials at the metro are yet to take a call as final report is to be drafted.

“It’s an initial report and the final report is expected to arrive in August, however, yes we look forward to options for the phase 2 beyond Tonk Road,” says a senior officer at JMRC.

French firm, EGIS Rail SA in joint venture with their India counterpart were appointed by the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation for review of the DPR last year. The company since has been carrying out traffic study of the city and reportedly has seen potential in the JLN Marg.

The entire length of JLN from Airport to SMS Hospital is under consideration. Along with the SMS hospital, Rajasthan University, several colleges and major public attractions are located on the road. There is also more free space available along the road as compared to highly commercialised Tonk Road.

Interestingly, the JLN Road was initially proposed for Metro route, however, the final DPR held Tonk Road a better choice for the phase 2 of Metro. Design of elevated road at Durgapura was also altered accordingly and still has pillars protruding to support the elevated road for the proposed the metro line.

However, the entire phase II is now under review, expected to cost more than Rs10,000 crore, it was a bit too expensive.

The consultancy firm to review the DPR has also been asked to look for options to reduce cost while improving the connectivity. It shall though take some more time before the JMRC decides on the fate of the phase as final report is awaited.
