Nomadic communities in Rajasthan are gearing up in support of their various demands. Members of the nomadic tribes held a meeting and staged a protest rally at Kotputli on Monday.

The state has a total 32 nomadic communities with an estimated population of 40 lakh. They have traditionally earned a livelihood by hearding livestock, performing on roads, weapon making, preparing traditional medicines from herbs, hunters animals to sell their body parts among others. Many of these professions have become illegal over time due to various Acts. This has rendered the community incapable of earning livelihood. The nomadic nature of their profession has created a situation where they do not have domicile and citizenship proof.
“We have no Aadhaar, no voter id, no We cannot avail benefit of any schemes due to this reason we are not a priority for politicians,” said Prakash Gadiya Lohar.
“Our list of 15 demands has been put forth to the government. This includes 5 acres cultivable land for every family, house, voting rights by giving us domicile and citizenship proof and BPL cards. We want special schools for our families,” said Sugan Bhai a nomadic tribal. “Officials have assured us that a proposal for land allocation to us would be prepared soon. Sulab Shauchalays and Rain Baseras would be constructed,” said Nityendra Manav of Jeevan Bachao Aandolan.
Nomadic communities face a time warp as they are yet to adjust to the present times. They have been raising their demands for decades, but they are yet to be met. With election round the corner, they have hopes.
