The Bengal School of Art is flaunting its talent in Mumbai at the Jehangir Art Gallery. A show, titled ‘Open Window’ brings together the works of nine artists from Kolkata. The show is organised by a group of the same name that was established in 1997 with the aim of pursuing artistic expressions free of any inhibition.
Amitava Dhar, one of the senior artists of the group who is also showing at the ongoing exhibition says, “Over the past 12 years, the group has formed an alliance. They have been regularly executing their creative discourses across the country as well as outside India.” He adds, “It is within the ideological vision of our group to pay homage to other artists from India as well as abroad and also hold workshops with them at regular intervals.”
Giving an introduction to few of the artist’s works Tapas Kohar says, “Sunil De’s paintings revolve around non-figurative forms where he consciously intends to break the solidity of an object to the delicateness of its microscopic structure.”
He continues, “Amitava Dhar punctuates with multiplicity of forms and visual elements. He loves to be called an expressionist, and abstraction is his core form. And his favourite medium is oil.” Tapas says, “The co-relation between the figurative and the non-figurative has become intense in my works. I am also intrigued with the passage of time. I take my inspiration from the unfinished miniature paintings and the art of the Bengal School.”
