More than 15,000 weddings are being solemnised in the city on Sunday as it is an auspicious day to get married.

Nitinn Raichura, wedding planner, Perfect Decor wedding planner says, “You want everyone to have a holiday on the day you get hitched if you want the gifts to pile up,” and adds, “Marriages in India are not small, private, two-individuals-with-a-few friends-and-family affairs. And it all comes together if it’s a Sunday and the right mahurat.” He says he has had to say no to many offers.

Hindu almanac experts point out that there are seven mahurats for wedding this month on November 9, 14, 18, 22, 23, 28 and 30 and only one is falling on Sunday when it will be the magha nakshatra,” said Gamdevi’s priest, Pandit Baalu Bhatt.

Needless to say, this has led to a scramble for the 1,424 marriage halls in the city. “As everybody is looking for well-connected, easy to travel yet attractively done-up places, this has led to rentals for the auditoriums going through the roof,” says Arun Dudhwadkar, a Mumbai central resident.

This harried father of the bride says, an air-conditioned hall at the tony Islamic Gymkhana with a capacity to seat 1,000 is charging him as much as Rs1.25 lakh. Mumbai’s entire fleet of 7,966 cars has also been booked.
