Waiting for your flight need not be a gruelling affair, with several airports across the globe offering travellers top-notch bistros and bars, as well as spas, make-up consultants and even private baths.

Travel magazine Travel + Leisure has come up with a list of the best airports, and their facilities, around the world as part of their 2010 Airport Awards, which the magazine said reflects a growing desire among travellers for a better airport experience.

"Most of us don't expect much from airport vendors, but there were some truly outstanding options cropping up around the globe," the magazine said on its website.

"Even if flights are running on time, passengers are showing up hours early, just in case security is a nightmare. Many international hubs recognize the value of a great airport experience."

This year, Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, Uruguay came up tops in the best new terminal category while Hong Kong International Airport's The Arrival passenger lounge was the top of its category.

For wining and dining, Frescobaldi Wine Bar in Rome's Fiumincino Airport was voted by the magazine as the best bar and Geneva International''s Altitude the best restaurant.

For shopaholics, Britto at Miami International was deemed the best by Travel + Leisure while those seeking pampering at Gatwick can head to the Cowshed Spa.
