Can you see the light?

It’s all about the perfect setting — an apartment or a flat turns into a home when you create the right ambience. And apart from all the furniture and decorative items, how you add lights to your space makes a big difference.

Gone are the days when people used regular tube lights and bulbs. With LED lights in place and interesting fixtures to go with, it’s time to light up every room differently.

While kids’ rooms might need brighter lights with interesting fixtures, a living room might do best with floor lamps and mood lighting.

In order to create different moods for different rooms, people have begun to opt for various types of lights that are now available in the market. Recently, Philips launched Living Colours that cater to individual rooms.

Explaining their concept, R Nandakishore, senior director, home decorative lighting, Philips Lighting India, says, “Lighting plays an integral part in every home and people today pay special attention when it comes to the choices available. Since every room has different roles to play, we have come up with lighting solutions to suit those needs. While a kitchen might need something more functional, a living room could do with something that’s visually appealing as well.”

It’s not just about creating different moods, Philips have also introduced innovative lighting concepts as well. “We have dim lighting with interesting fixtures for a cozy evening, and we have also come up with cute designs for kids’ rooms as well. Our recent, ambience accessory works on a similar concept to that of a candle. It’s rechargable and consumes less power. We also have lights in different colours,” he offers.

On customising lights for different rooms, interior designer Sandeep Bangera says, “Since, every home is designed in such a manner that it has different themes, lighting concepts work in a big way.”

Designer and rallyist Anita Kholay, who has used innovative lighting concepts at home, says, “Light has the tendency to either brighten up your mood or ruin it. So, it’s necessary to have varied styles of lighting for each of the rooms. One can opt for dim lights while watching television or a movie, while a kitchen requires a brighter light that pretty much overs all corners. Decide accordingly on the type of lighting you require for different rooms as it does bring about a huge change.”
