There’s nothing more attractive than a great smile. And dimples are long known to enhance that. With celebrities like Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Garner and Cheryl flashing their dimpled smiles, and closer home Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu, it’s no wonder youngsters want them too. In the US, Dimpleplasty that promises semi-permanent dimples for few months has found many takers in millenials. After Hrs ask experts if the treatment is in demand here too.
Dimples sign of attractiveness
Dr Mohan Thomas, Senior cosmetic surgeon, Cosmetic Surgery institute explains the reason for the popularity of dimpleplasty. Dimples on the cheek usually run in families with some exceptions. An animated dimple which becomes prominent on smiling looks attractive. In most parts of the world, dimples are viewed as a sign of attractiveness. This is because dimples do make a person look more baby-faced. “Some people consider dimples so attractive that they go as far to getting surgery done to create one. This treatment has become very popular in India because of Bollywood celebrities like John Abraham, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Deepika Padukone etc flaunting them. More and more youngsters (males and females) are considering this procedure so as to achieve a cute look, he says, adding, “Youngsters in the age group of 22-30 years commonly come in for these procedures.
They are most influenced by Bollywood and since this procedure can be undertaken relatively easily more and more youngsters are seeking it. I have also helped people who want to change their looks since they want to get remarried, I have combined dimple surgery with other face surgeries for them.”
Minimal downtime
Dimpleplasty involves making a cut in skin around the mouth and stitching the underside of the skin to a deeper layer to create a small depression. The suture holding the skin in place dissolves to leave the patient with a permanent scar to maintain the dimple, explains Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic and La Piel. “This treatment is gaining popularity in India too. Mostly patients who want dimple creation are influenced by Hollywood and Bollywood stars. Sometimes youngsters as young as 18 opt for this treatment. A lot of the times they visit with their parents and ask for the same.” Dr Viral Desai, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon, DHI India & CPLSS, adds that the approximate cost would be Rs 25,000 to 50,000. Recovery period (downtime) would be one week approximately. The patient can join work the very next day since it is a day care procedure.
Some side effects
Dr Rohit Batra Dermatologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, explains since dimpleplasty is minimally invasive, highly affordable, has minimal downtime and instant results, it is a great option for those who want to enhance their looks. But are there any side effects? “Although the long-term effects of surgery are unknown, the side-effects including bleeding, scarring and under or over correction and weakness of the muscles involved in the procedure. In case your treatment doesn’t go well, complications like abscesses may happen. The result is visible right after the treatment and lasts for a long period of time,” he says.
