After Hrs takes a look at celebs who got a tattoo dedicated to their movies and TV shows
That celebs get tattoos dedicated to their love interest, family members and pets comes as no surprise.
However, actors also get inked in memory of the cult movies and TV shows that they have featured in and which have catapulted them to be a global name. Recently, Sophie Turner, better known as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones (GoT), got a tattoo dedicated to the show. We take a look at other celebrities who went under the needle in a similar fashion...
SOPHIE TURNER
Just a few days ago, the English actress got a tattoo of House Stark emblem on her arm with a caption that reads ‘The pack survives.’ The design seems to be a direct reference to a quote by Ned Stark (Sansa’s father) on GoT — “When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.” Ever since the image was uploaded on Instagram, it sent fans — who are trying to decipher its cryptic meaning about what’s going to happen in the final season — into a frenzy. Incidentally, this is Sophie’s second tattoo in memory of the show. The first one is with her on-screen sister, Maisie Williams.
AVENGERS STARS
In April, five members of the original cast of Avengers — Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, with the exception of Mark Ruffalo (he opted out) — got matching tattoos to celebrate the release of Avengers: Infinity War (2018). They got the Avengers symbol intertwined with the number. It was Scarlett’s idea to get the cast inked. After they went under the needle, they returned the favour by inking tattoo artist, Josh Lord, with their versions of his artwork.
MAISIE WILLIAMS & SOPHIE TURNER
The young actress, who plays Arya Stark in GoT, and her co-star Sophie Turner are good friends off-screen. The two got matching tattoos of the date ‘07.08.09’, dedicated to the show. Last year, Sophie revealed to Elle UK, “We always said that we wanted them, so we got the date 07.08.09 on our arms because that’s the date that both of us found out we’d got our roles in Game Of Thrones. So, when we had a day off from filming in Belfast, we just went to a tattoo place and got it done.”
SELENA GOMEZ, ALISHA BOE AND TOMMY DORFMAN
The singer-actress turned producer with the much talked about controversial teen Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. Last year, Selena, along with two cast members — Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman, paid a tribute to their show along with spreading mental health awareness by getting matching semicolon tattoos on their wrists. What’s the significance? It represents mental health struggles and the importance of suicide prevention. Project Semicolon was born from a social media movement in 2013.
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS STAR CAST
Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse — the cast of the hit teen TV series Pretty Little Liars got themselves inked in dedication to their show, which made them teen icons. In 2016, after getting done with the show’s final season (season 7), the pretty girl squad got the first initial of their character’s names tattooed on their index fingers.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS
In March 2017, in order to celebrate the renewal of the second season of his Netflix show, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Neil Patrick Harris got himself a tatt of the Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) insignia from the series. “We got picked up for Season 2 of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I got this to celebrate. #firsttattoo #anklebone #oof #olaf #scampstamp,” Neil wrote on Instagram uploading his newly acquired permanent mark.
TEAM SUICIDE SQUAD
It may be a forgettable film but the cast of Suicide Squad (2016), Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman, have the movie etched not only in their memory but also their bodies. Margot, Will and Cara played tattoo artists to the movie cast by inking them with matching ‘SKWAD’ tattoos.
BRYAN CRANSTON AND AARON PAUL
They became household names due to their successful TV series, Breaking Bad (2008-13). And so, on the last day of filming of their show, Bryan Cranston got the crime drama show’s ‘Br, Ba’ logo on the inside of his ring finger on his right hand. Though Cranston isn’t a tattoo person, he still got one, saying, “But I wanted something… something that would give me private personal pleasure, like when I pass by and catch a glimpse of a picture of my mom, or my old manager. People who are gone now. And it seemed appropriate. I mean, Breaking Bad changed my life.” On the other hand (literally), Aaron Paul got the phrase ‘No Half Measures’ inked on his bicep. The reference is to the line from the season three episode, Half Measures.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS CAST
The cast of the epic fantasy action movie — Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Sean Bean, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Viggo Mortensen and Sean Astin — got the Elvish word ‘nine’ inscribed permanently on various body parts. The reason being, nine was the number of members in the fellowship who went on a quest to destroy the ring found by Frodo Baggins; whereas director Peter Jackson got the Elvish number 10 tattooed on his arm. Elijah said, “We felt the experience was both wonderful enough and profound enough to have ourselves branded.”
TOM HOLLAND
After his big break in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Tom Holland decided to commemorate it by getting a body art of the Spider-Man symbol on the bottom of his foot. The actor revealed that he had to get the painful tattoo done thrice because it kept fading.
