Former Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney is heavily campaigning for vegetarianism and is promoting an initiative titled ‘Meat-Free Monday’ that is garnering a lot of support from his Los Angeles counterparts. Paul’s movement is asking people who indulge in non-veg food to go veggie at least once a week. Analysts say in their research that consumption of non-veg food is contributing to acceleration of global warming.
‘Meat-Free Monday’ is gaining momentum with many heavyweights already supporting the cause. It is learnt that actors Joanna Lumley, Kevin Spacey, Woody Harrelson and even industrialist Sir Richard Branson are giving wing to the initiative. Recently singer Sheryl Crow too supported vegetarianism.
Supporters of Hinduism in the US are welcoming this move by saying that it is their religion that promotes non-violence, a
release said.
“Hinduism promoted strict vegetarianism insisting on ahimsa (not harming living creatures) and non-killing. All the major religions of the world were opposed to killing,” said a US release.
They are also asking more celebrities to come out in support of vegetarianism, thus contributing to a healthier world and helping the environment. A 2006 UN report stated that the livestock industry adds to 18 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
Sir Paul was quoted as saying, “I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world.”
