Popular for their drapes and contemporary fashion sense, designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra will debut today at the Delhi couture week.

The designers who always come up with contemporary collections, have their designs based on vintage royalty inspired by the Elizabethan era this time.

High on glamour, the collection, says Shantanu, is their endeavour towards innovating and glamourising Indian bridal wear.

Talking about their couture debut in Delhi, Shantanu says, “In India couture is not about pieces of art and installation, it’s wedding wear. Marriages are a special occasion in India and every family and the bride wish for a grand wedding ceremony. But today’s bride is modern and more than bling she prefers understated work with layerings and intricate work.

And this is what we are working on — cocktail couture. Bling cannot be separated from bridal wear, especially when blingy wedding wear is big in aspiring markets (smaller cities), but chic and elegant drape style contemporary Indian bridal wear is a growing trend now.”

Ask him if he feels smaller cities too are a potent market for designer wear and Shantanu replies, “Today cities closer to metros are fast aiming towards being at par with metros. For instance, Pune is getting as big as Mumbai; it’s similar to Delhi and Bangalore.

These markets have a lot of money and are fast emerging winners. In the time to come, they will certainly outdo other places,” says the designer.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha is the showstopper for the duo’s collection tonight.

“Sonakshi is the representation of a young bride who wishes for a fairytale wedding with a contemporary sense. Sonakshi completely fits this collection. Besides, being a fashion graduate, she has a lot of knowledge on fashion. She can carry off a gown or a saree with equal elan. Moreover, we have earlier worked with her and she is versatile in her fashion sense,” concludes Shantanu.
