Asking money for a 'kebab' cost a 22-year-old youth from Jharkhand his life in east Delhi when two youths allegedly stabbed him with the skewer used for preparing the dish.

Shabir, the victim, worked at a meat shop during the day and ran the eatery in east Delhi's Kalyanpuri in the night, to earn money for his poor family back home.

It all started at around 9pm yesterday when some youths came to his shop and ordered a kebab.

However, an argument broke out over payment soon which led to a scuffle between the youths and Shabir.

One of the two men snatched the skewer used for preparing kebab and stabbed Shabir before fleeing from the spot.

He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Two youths Sonu and Babu were arrested in connection with the case, police said.

A senior police official said Shabir belonged to a poor family and to earn money he used to work in a meat shop during the day and in the night ran his own kebab shop. He was staying in a rented accommodation in Kalyanpuri.

This is the second incident of crime reported in the city with regard to payment of food bill.

On Monday night, a Punjab police constable allegedly opened fire at a roadside eatery owner in Chanakyapuri following an argument over paying the bill. However, the eatery owner escaped by a whisker.

The capital had seen 543 murders last year out of which 17% were due to sudden provocation or trivial reasons.

The murders were committed for reasons ranging from argument over street dogs, buying curd, crying of infant, beating drums, playing cricket and consuming liquor.
