Fragrance will fill the air at Swapna Nagari here today as an army of 1,000 people, including 500 students, try and create the world's biggest 'Pookalam' (floral carpet) to get into the Guinness World Records.
Spread over a massive 15,000 square feet, the flowers will
be brought from Tamil Nadu. The floral 'artistes' will have
two hours to take a shot at the record.
Titled Sneha pookalam, the design was selected from 15 entries. People from all walks of life, who believe in the
concept of religious harmony and universal brotherhood, can take part in the event, being held as part of the Onam festival celebrations, district collector Dr PB Salim said.
The previous record was set in 2008 at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor
Stadium at Ernakulam, where the Kerala police prepared a Jana Maithri pookalam over 12,000 square feet.
The district authorities have contacted the Guinness authorities in London to make an on-the-spot assessment of the flower carpet.
