Indian by birth, but global in outlook, fashion designer Malini Murjani has lived out her life between Europe and America.
Daughter of Mohan Murjani who got several luxury brands to India, Malini can pass off as a muse to her luxury handbag label. The designer is currently in Mumbai to do a special show with fashion store owner Maithili Ahluwalia.
Talking to DNA, she says, “My collection is a constant osmosis from one culture to another. I have a multi-cultural upbringing, therefore the core of my influence comes from travelling. Whenever I travel, I fill my bags with the motivation I can draw from the places I visit.”
Active on the social scene in New York, Murjani’s bags are popular in the world of elite fashion and entertainment world, “Yes, in the New York social scene I interact with lots of celebs — Padma Lakshmi, Alicia Keys or Blake Lively. Knowing that these people love what I create gives me the drive to work harder to further create special pieces.”
Malini, who’s constantly featured in fashion magazines for her personal style, has also earned praises from biggies like Tommy Hilfiger, Sarah Jessica Parker.
“I love doing lines for the luxury brand houses. As a designer I get a wholesome view of the market’s needs and also get to cater to various segments than just sticking to the luxury line I normally do.”
Her 3-month old daughter Amalya is a huge influence in Malini’s life, “I created a large tote bag with lots of compartments, understanding my need of carrying various stuff. It isn’t exactly a diaper bag, but has all the necessary functions of being one. My daughter is surely my constant source of inspiration. I would love to do a ‘mommy and me’ kind of bags line dedicating it to my baby.”
