Out of the box designs

Fashion goes experimental as shoe and accessory designers find inspiration in all things quirky.

Summer is here and, as any fashionista will tell you, easy-to-wear and light weight clothing is the order of the day. And the same stands true for the accessories department.

Shoe designer Rohan Arora, who will show at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week, says that though people shouldn’t stop experimenting with footwear, they could do without completely closed footwear this season. “Full or partially open footwear will help the feet breathe. And though flats and high heels are both recommended, the only criteria is that the wearer should ensure that they treat comfort as top priority, especially while stepping out in the sun,” he says.

The designer also advises that one distances themselves from footwear with black uppers and indulge in flirty shades apt for the season. “Pink, rust, purple and olive green are some of the season’s favourite shades,” says Rohan, who has experimented with the heel in his new line. “I’ve played with rounded, tapered and slab heels and decked them with hand-painted designs. Each heel gives an insight into the lifestyle of the rich and the famous — with paintings of a luxury car, a couple holidaying on a beach, people partying in a discotheque, wine and champagne bottles, to name a few,” he says.

Accessories designer Malini Agarwala, who will unveil her new line on the ramp today, says that women want to flaunt bags or jewellery that helps them make a statement. “They’re looking for a definite style and have realised that a simple outfit can be made to look stunning depending on how it is accessoried,” says Malini, adding that style, utility and finish are the three basic things one should look for in an accessory.

Malini, who was inspired by the fun and frolic of the Brazilian carnival and the samba, has played around with sequins and feathers to represent this fun fest aptly.

And talking about making a statement, accessory designer Suhanie Pittie has a line-up of sharp steel finish designs clubbed with copper spokes, steel brick mosaics and the like.
