Pune’s young Hindustani classical vocalist, Sawani Shende, 31, has literally been born with a tanpura in her hand.
Starting her training at the tender age of six under the tutelage of her grandmother Kusum Shende, a ‘Kirana gharana’ exponent, Sawani took to music, like fish to water.
Later, under the able guidance of her father, Pandit Sanjeev Shende, who shared his aesthetic vision with her, Sawani has blossomed into a vocalist whose music touches the hearts of both the young and the old. This was clearly evident in her brilliant debut at the 2010 edition of the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav in Pune.
Like her father, Sawani believes that ‘Sur’ is a universal truth and a beautiful note brings joy, whether it’s classical, semi-classical or light music. Her profound knowledge of ragas, the depth and variety in voice and smooth renditions makes her performances memorable.
Sawani has been tutored by an enviable list of gurus. She was lucky to learn ragas and compositions from Pandit Chhota Gandharva. Later, as a disciple of Shobha Gurtu, she learnt thumris and dadras from the master.
Sawani also learnt different ragas, taan patterns and taranas from Veena Sahasrabuddhe, the ace, Gwalior Gharana vocalist.
Sawani told the Sawai audience in December 2010, “I truly believe that music is the nearest path to reach God! It has the power to soothe your souls. My aim in life is to share the joy and happiness that I experience in music with everybody.”
The multifaceted singer has also composed numerous ‘bandishes’ in different ragas and taals and is a recipient of many awards.
At a young age, she has also managed to perform at many music festivals across India and has extensively toured USA and Canada.
