The five-day Durga Puja festivities that are celebrated by Bengalis all across the globe with fun and fervour will end today (October 24) with Bijoya Dashami. The day is celebrated to rejoice in the triumph of good over evil as it is believed that on this day the Goddess slew the demon king, Mahishasur. As the last day of Durga Puja, it is also an equally emotional moment for the Bengali community as they bid adieu to Goddess Durga.

It is also celebrated as Dussehra, which marks the end of the Shardiya Navratri festivities with the triumph of good over evil and is celebrated to remember Lord Ram's victory over Ravana. This year, Dussehra falls is being celebrated on October 24 (Tuesday). On this day, Lord Rama had defeated Ravana. The word Dussehra is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Dasha’ which means ten and ‘hara’ which means defeat. Ravana's effigies are burnt across the country to symbolise the destruction of evil.

During this time, friends and relatives visit each other with sweets and other delicacies.
