The postal department has come out with a special water-proof envelope to send rakhis’.

The envelopes are available for sale at all post offices. As Rakshabandhan mostly falls during the monsoon, rakhis’ sent through post often get damaged due to water percolation and moisture.

This is mainly because envelopes in which rakhis’ are sent, are made of ordinary paper, which get damaged easily.

But the postal department’s new initiative is not only water-proof but can also put up with the wear and tear of transport. The envelopes come in various designs and colours.

Priced at Rs5, the special envelopes are available at all post-offices and sub-post offices in India. To cater to the demand, Surat postal division has ordered 13,200 such envelopes for this Rakshabandhan. “ Rakhis will be much safer in these envelopes. The postal department is charging a nominal price for the same to make it affordable,” said M Patel, superintendent of postal department (Surat).

Patel said the envelopes can also be used to send Rakhis abroad.

All envelopes will be sent to the Mumbai office, from where it will be dispatched to respected countries. The sale of envelopes will continue till Rakshabandhan.
