Indian-American designer Naeem Khan talks about his White House fashion moment with the US First Lady.

Michelle Obama decided to go Indian for her first official state dinner which was with Indian prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and wife Gursharan Kaur recently. The US First Lady wore a one-of-a-kind sterling silver sequin abstract floral nude strapless gown custom-made by New York-based designer Naeem Khan for the India-themed event.

Naeem told DNA, “I feel so happy to be a part of this historical event between the two countries where my heart lies. I am relieved to have a job well done and am so honoured to have been chosen. This is a Thanksgiving in its truest form for me and one that I will never forget — an American dream coming true.”

Naeem has designed for celebrities such as Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Debra Messing, Carrie Underwood, Katherine Heigl, Kim Cattrall and Queen Noor of Jordan, and his designs have graced the silver screen in fashion film classics like Dreamgirls and Sex and the City. The grandson of a textile entrepreneur who specialised in elaborate embroidery, Khan moved at 20 years to the United States to school and later assisted iconic designer Halston.
