From Swarovski crystals, silver foiling and gold leafing on rich and luxurious fabrics — soft furnishings embody all the trappings of luxury.

In the world of interior design, fabrics play a defining role in creating a certain look for a space. “Without a doubt, fabrics can make an area look opulent or just plain vanilla depending on how you use them. Playing around with chenille, velvet, silk, organza and faux leather can add substantial amounts of style to one’s home interiors,” says a spokesperson for luxury home interiors store Atmosphere.

But what’s interesting in furnishing fabrics are the new additions available in the market. DNA does a recce and unearths some chic options. Materials like Swarovski crystals on sheer, velvet with silver foiling or gold leafing on silk, satin silk, lame can totally transform a simple room into a stunner of a place. “Now, the trend is towards combining different fabrics together rather than only using one,” says Anita Arya, director-sales and marketing, Pride.

Captain Sanket Kumar Suri, director, Seasons Club Class says, “Fusion is the latest catchword. For instance, lime greens, blues and browns, and greens and browns are in huge demand now and they are being teamed up with paisleys motifs in bright hues thereby exuding a contemporary look.”

So what are the contemporary motifs and colours that are increasingly making their presence felt? “Floral prints are hot on the scene right now, but not for their usual rounded edges, rather for their uneven ends. People aren’t afraid to use bold colours, especially bright reds for their upholstery,” explains Thanawala adding, “colours like silver ash, aubergine, steel grey, fresh olive and lime tones seem to be flying off the shelves very quickly.”

Many Bollywood actors like Rani Mukherji, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, who have recently done up their homes, have bought yards of fabric from Atmosphere. Seasons Club Class have had their fabrics doll up the sets of Moulin Rouge, deck up Balaji Telefilms sets, drape the suits of the Taj and Oberoi group of hotels, luxuriously embellish the Palace on Wheels and furnish the Prime Minister’s home in Delhi!

Like all things beautiful, these fabrics come with a price ranging between  Rs1,000 to Rs6,500 per meter. But these fabrics not only make for a beautiful piece de résistance, but also assure that you get an aesthetic work of art…two for the price of one!
