World environment Day is to make people aware of the exploitation and harm that has been unleashed on the nature and to remind people to do their bit.

Word Environment is observed globally on June 5 every year. It is celebrated to mark the importance of nature and raise awareness among people about how the environment should not be taken for granted and should be valued at every cost.

History

The first major conference on environmental issues was held from June 5-16 in 1972 under the guidance of the United Nations, in Stockholm (Sweden), which marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics.

The goal of the Stockholm Conference was to forge a basic common outlook on how to address the challenge of preserving and enhancing the human environment. Later that year, on December 15, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a specialised agency on environmental issues was formed.

In 1974, World Environment Day was celebrated with the theme 'Only One Earth’. The crucial day was first observed in 1974 in the US and since then has been celebrated by various countries to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

Theme 2021

The theme of Word Environment Day 2021 is 'Reimagine. Recreate. Restore.’ The day will kickstart the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) which is a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea. Ecosystem restoration refers to preventing, halting and reversing the damage caused by mankind over the past many years.

Last year’s theme was ‘Celebrate Diversity’.

Significance

World environment Day is to make people aware of the exploitation and harm that has been unleashed on the nature and to remind people to do their bit in order to save and preserve mother nature.

It is celebrated to acknowledge everything the environment has given us and thatwe are what we are because of mother nature. On this day, government and citizens make an extra effort to generate awareness on issues detrimental to the environment.
