At least 11 persons were injured after a 30-year old a chawl in a transit camp in Dharavi collapsed partially, around 6.30 am on Thursday. The injured have been admitted in Sion hospital and two of them are said to be critical. Police said that the incident occurred on the first and second floor of the house.
According to fire brigade officials, they cleared the debris, and rescued people with the help of locals. "All the injured were asleep when the ground plus two storey building partially collapsed," said a fire brigade official.
The injured, who are daily wage labourers, were immediately rushed to Sion hospital. "Two of them received major injuries and they are currently recuperating in Sion hospital," said an official from the Dharavi police station. Most of the injured are in the age group of 20 to 30 years while one of them is a minor.
According to civic officials, the building might be dilapidated and this may be why it was collapsed. However, the locals alleged that owner of the building had added two more floors for which he had not sought permission.
The house is located on 90 foot road in Dharavi and the owner of the house stays on the ground floor while he had rented out the first and second floor.
