Minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir said that the government was planning a ward-wise master plan to be prepared for the number of societies which are due for redevelopment.

The overall mood in the seminar on redevelopment organised by DNA and MSWA was quite upbeat with the society members being very enthusiastic about information on redevelopment plans.

While most speakers urged societies to safeguard their interests while going for redevelopment, minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir said that the government was planning a ward-wise master plan to be prepared for the number of societies which are due for redevelopment.

“The government cannot have complete control over issues such as redevelopment or rehabilitation or resettlement. However, the government promises to be proactive in resolving issues,” said Ahir.

During his speech, he said that there were close to 20,000 buildings in the city that were more than 30 years old and due for redevelopment. “Many times, the demands made by residents make the project financially non-viable. The greed to get more out of a redevelopment project needs to be curtailed by both society members and the developers,” added Ahir. While presenting the developer lobby’s case, Sharad Doshi of Sheth Developers, said, “A developer has to get 48 different kinds of approvals from various departments, making the process time consuming. We expect the residents to be patient during this period,” opined Doshi.

Sandip Deshmukh, the deputy registrar for the Mumbai division from the state cooperative department, said, “There are officials specially appointed by our department to help resolve issues such as deemed conveyance. I appeal the society members to avail such benefits.”
