The Crime Branch on Monday arrested a youth who allegedly murdered a 50-year-old resident of Versova on July 31. Eknath Kadam, 23, was arrested at the Asiad bus stop at Dadar.
Anil Vaswani, a resident of Kasmani building, was found dead in his flat by his three daughters. The daughters, who work in the film industry, alleged that Kadam had killed their father. The Bandra unit of the Crime Branch got information that Kadam would come to Mumbai from Pune on Monday, the unit’s sub-inspector Sagar Shivalkar said.
Kadam allegedly stole gold jewellery worth Rs67,000 from Vaswani’s house after the murder. The police have recovered jewellery worth Rs40,000 from him.
Kadam, a resident of Bhayander, used to work in a small industrial unit which manufactured motors for mixer grinders. He had allegedly befriended Vaswani at a tea shop near Andheri railway station. His daughters had allegedly promised him a job in the world of entertainment.
“Kadam had visited Vaswani’s house on July 19 and 23. On July 30, he had gone there to help Vaswani pack since the latter was shifting home,” Maria said. Following this, Kadam stayed the night over at Vaswani’s residence. However, on July 31 after Vaswani’s daughters left for work, the duo got into an argument and Kadam beat the victim to death using an iron rod, Maria said.
“We will hand him over to the Versova police, who will investigate the case,” joint commissioner of police (crime) Rakesh Maria said.
