Maeer’s MIT School of Governance and Bharat Asmita Foundation, for the first time, have organised a three-day Parliament of Indian student council leaders to sensitise the youth towards democracy and the political scenario. The event will kick-off on Wednesday.
The Parliament will be inaugurated by Union human resource development minister, Kapil Sibal and presided over by state chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan.
The state higher and technical education minister, Rajesh Tope; Pune mayor, Mohansingh Rajpal; former chief election commissioner, TN Seshan; and others would attend the function. The parliament has been organised in association with the state higher and technical education department.
Executive director of the MIT group and chief convener of Parliament, Rahul Karad said, “We have entries from over 6,000 colleges from across the country and a registration of over 5,000 students. The aim is to provide a political platform for students committed to lead the society, to effect political changes and to strengthen democracy.”
He said, “These students are the country’s future and through this parliament, we want to create a movement. All the programmes will be conducted by these students. Ten resolutions will be passed, including one on scholarships and stipends for economically weaker students at graduation and postgraduation level by all state governments.”
On the last day, voting will take place and the results announced on the spot, he said. The students have registered on the website www.indianstudentparliament.com. The registration is open till 12 noon on Wednesday. The resolutions passed during all the sessions of the parliament will be sent to policy-making bodies of the government, he said.
