The management of 347 colleges and 132 institutes affiliated to the University of Pune in three districts of Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik would have been in dire straits had the Supreme Court not granted them relief.  Pune University, on Tuesday, had announced the blacklisting of these educational institutions as they had failed to appoint full-time principals and directors.

The consequences were that these colleges and institutes would have been prevented from admitting students to the first year courses, involving about three lakh students. Pune university has a total of 616 affiliated colleges and 293 institutes in the three districts. The list of these colleges and institutes has been uploaded by Pune university on www.unipune.ernet.in.However, on Tuesday evening, the apex court granted six more months to these educational institutions to fill up those posts.  State higher education minister Rajesh Tope confirmed that the state government had appealed to the apex court seeking some time for the institutions to make the appointments. Interestingly, of the three districts, Pune has the highest number of colleges and institutions that failed to comply with the court’s directives.

The Supreme Court in December 2008 had directed that state colleges and institutes ensure full time principals and directors are appointed by May 31, 2009. Later, it gave a year’s extension after some colleges appealed for more time.

Varsity vice chancellor RK Shevgaonkar said around 40% of colleges had not appointed full-time qualified principals.
