Five labourers were killed and one seriously injured when a temporary lift collapsed at an under-construction building here this morning, police said.
The make-shift lift at Rustomjee Towers in suburban Matunga collapsed at around 9.30 am, they said.
"A total of six labourers were in the lift and were coming down when the wire snapped and the lift crashed. Four were killed on the spot, two were rushed to government-run Sion hospital. One of them succumbed to injuries while the second one is still battling for life," a senior police officer said.
Police have detained the contractor Mayur Shah and are questioning him. "It seems like a case of negligence. The lift was made in a haphazard manner and had no safety-gear," the officer said.
