PMC standing committee rushes to clear proposals before model code of conduct sets in for February civic elections.

As many as 60 proposals for development works amounting to Rs50 crore were approved by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) standing committee in a single meeting on Friday with barely four months left for the next civic polls.

In all likelihood, the administration is expected to place 3,000 tenders of development works for approval before the committee. A decision has been taken to create a special department in the tender cell to expedite the process for approval of tenders.

The development works approved on Friday include a Rs20 crore project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (Jnnurm) for development of rivers, nalas, lakes and water bodies in the city. Under this project, development works of Bhairoba nala and Osho Park nala would be undertaken.

The committee approved repairing of garbage ramps of Aundh, Ghole Road and Yerawada ward offices. A cement concrete road in Lullanagar area and an underpass for pedestrians near Market Yard were among the projects approved by the committee.

The committee also approved an iron foot overbridge on Alandi Road for pedestrians with expenditure of Rs71 lakh.
Standing committee chairman, Ganesh Bidkar, told journalists on Saturday that all development works in the civic budget would be started before the model code of conduct is introduced for the PMC elections. Works are to be completed by March 2012.

The PMC election is due in February 2012 and the model code of conduct for the same is likely to be introduced any day after December 15.

Inauguration of new projects or making announcements is prohibited when the model code of conduct is in force.
Bidkar said the meeting of the committee on Friday was held after the model code of conduct for Khadakwasla by-poll was withdrawn. The administration had put up many proposals for approval.
