PUNE: Seven people, who had kidnapped a builder by posing as policemen last October, kidnapped him again on May 27 demanding a ransom of Rs1.5 crore.
They were, however, arrested after the builder escaped from their clutches and approached the police.
The Pune rural police arrested the accused on Sunday. They said Shirur-based builder and sandalwood merchant Maruti Yelappa More, 30, was kidnapped on May 27.
In October last year, More was abducted by the suspects posing as policemen. He was kept in a secret place at Purandar taluka, and the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs75 lakh. More’s family managed to free him by paying the kidnappers. After releasing More, the abductors realised that they had been paid only Rs32 lakh. They felt cheated and planned to kidnap More again, the police said.
They kidnapped More on May 27 when he and a relative were travelling on a motorcycle in Shirur, Pune rural superintendent of police Vishwas Nangre-Patil said. “The suspects, in a jeep, intercepted More’s motorcycle and abducted him.”
The next day, More’s family received a ransom call from his cellphone. The caller demanded Rs1.50 crore for his release. Nangre-Patil said the family immediately informed the police about the kidnapping.
A team headed by police inspector Bhausaheb Andhalkar and assistant inspector Arvind Gokule was formed to crack the case. The team obtained details of the jeep used by the suspects to kidnap More.
The team learned that the jeep had halted at Barshi in Solapur district. As the police was making progress in the case, More called his mother saying he had managed to escape from the abductors who had taken him to Vadala village.
According to the police, the abductors caught him after his escape and beat him up. When villagers saw a man being beaten up, they intervened and beat up the alleged
abductors. Meanwhile, the police team following the jeep’s trail also reached the spot and arrested the seven people.
The suspects were identified as Mahesh Jagannath Kamble, 30, and Yusuf Sajanna Nadaf, 27, both residents of Bibvewadi; Kuber Kalidas Vadane, 29, and Sunil Nagnath Vadane, both residents of Tuljapur in Osmanabad; Nagnath Bhanudas Gawali of Solapur; Tamma, alias Dashrath Rupnavare, of Osmanabad; and Arjun Vilas Pol of Latur. Another person accused in the case, Babu Janardhan Tivase, was still at large, the police said.
Kamble and Nadaf had planned the crime to obtain easy money. His first attempt had fetched him less money than he had bargained for. He then decided to kidnap More again. This time he used underpaid waiters of a hotel on Bibvewadi-Kondhwa road, the police said.
The police have recovered fire arms, sharp-edged weapons and three vehicles used in the crime from the suspects.
