Around 6.15am, outside Yard No. 10, Mustafa Dossa and his associate Abdul Kayum Sheikh threatened to kill Salem and attacked him with a sharp steel spoon that was shaped like a knife. In the ensuing scuffle, Salem sustained minor injuries on his cheek and neck. He was given medical aid inside the prison.

On learning of the commotion, the jail staff rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control. They then informed the NM Joshi Marg police about the incident.

“We have registered a case under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 506-2 (threatening to kill) and 34 (common intention) against Dossa and Sheikh and also recovered a sharp steel spoon looked like a knife,” said senior police inspector Vasant Tajne of NM Joshi Marg police station.

Tajne said that the police recorded the statements of Abu Salem, Dossa, Sheikh and the jail guards on duty. Security also has been beefed up outside the jail. He added that investigations are on to find out the reason behind the scuffle. Highly placed sources said that Salem will be soon shifted to Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai.

Minister of state for home, Ramesh Bagve later visited Arthur Road prison to check the security arrangements.

Meanwhile, in the state assembly, opposition members raised questions over the security of Ajmal Kasab in the wake of this attack. Devendra Fadanvis of the BJP said that the attack on an undertrial in a jail where Kasab is housed is a serious incident which has put a question mark on the security inside the jail.

Deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, however, asserted that Kasab was safe as he has been lodged in a strong room constructed especially for him.
