A civic activist from Kalina, Crompton Texeria, has threatened municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta and the H-East ward staff with blackening of face if the silt from drains heaped on the sides of roads is not removed.

Texeria alleged that contractors appointed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have not removed the silt even after repeated reminders. He added that the silt had flowed back into the drains after the first few hours of rain and made the roads mucky.

Texeria had been writing emails and sending text messages to the civic chief, assistant commissioner of H-East Prashant Gaikwad and also to his staff. "A fortnight ago, I had written to the assistant commissioner about the issue.

The silt removed from the drains in Kalina and Vakola was heaped on the sides of the roads. A week ago, when silt was removed from the drains again, it was left at 15 places. When I brought this to the notice of the staff, they agreed to clear it. However, nothing was done," alleged Texeria.

On June 11, when it rained for more than two hours, all the silt from the sides of the road flowed back into the drains. Texeria said he then deiced to write to Mehta, and sent this message to the civic chief: "Mr Ajoy Mehta, I have sent emails to you a week back stating that I had texted Mr Gaikwad of H-East ward and his junior engineer about the silt mud and filth removed from storm water drains and gutters. The silt has not been cleared even after several phone calls and text messages. It rained today for two hours in Kalina and the mud and silt is not only getting back into the drains but causing muck around the place. If this continues, it will choke the drains. I will not hesitate to blacken your face in public as you are unable to act against your ward officers."

Texeria said that to his surprise, instead of clearing the existing silt and mud, labourers on Monday were again removing silt from the drains and putting it back on the roads.

Repeated attempts to contact Gaikwad for his comments failed.
