A day after opposition members in the state legislative assembly raised a ruckus over former chief minister and present industry minister Narayan Rane’s name figuring in the Adarsh scam, opposition parties in the legislative council did an encore.

The opposition members insisted that given the gravity of the Adarsh scandal, the council should be allowed to discuss the matter.

Sena leader Neelam Gorhe further said that just as former CM Ashok Chavan had resigned after his name figured in the Adarsh scam, Rane too should submit his resignation till his name was cleared.

Incidentally, Rane was with the Shiv Sena when he became CM of Maharashtra.

CM Prithviraj Chavan came to Rane’s defence by declaring that while the government was determined to unravel the Adarsh scam and that it was important for the truth to come out, it would be unfair to judge anyone while the investigation was still going on.

“All the ministers of Maharashtra and the Centre have cooperated with the ongoing judicial probe and have either appeared before the commission or submitted an affidavit whenever required,” he said.

He dismissed the demand that that Rane step down, pointing out that merely because someone’s name was taken during a probe did not mean that the person concerned was guilty.

He also urged the opposition not to politicise the issue, since the matter was sub-judice.
