Aditya Thackeray effect: Lovebirds can breathe easy this Valentine

Written By Rahul M Tawade | Updated:

Call it the Aditya Thackeray effect, coupled with the changing political scenario in the state, the Shiv Sena, which once vehemently opposed Valentine's Day celebrations, is unlikely to create any ruckus in the city today. Lovebirds can now heave a sigh of relief and make the most of the day.

"We are still opposed to vulgar display of love. We are of the opinion that any occasion must be celebrated within the parameters of Hindu culture and tradition," said Navi Mumbai Shiv Sena leader Vijay Mane.

Another city leader, on the condition of anonymity, said, "Ever since Aditya Thackeray has taken over the reins of the Sena's youth wing, several youth have been attracted towards the party and given the political situation today in the state and in the country, it would be inappropriate to antagonise them. It is true that the Sena had been against such celebrations in the past and we are still opposed to such vulgar display of love."

The party's stand is also significant since elections are round the corner and it would not like to take any risks that would alienate any section of voters, especially since the saffron wave is looking strong this time.
A Sena leader, said, "Our party is raising issues of public welfare and corruption in the government and we want to focus on that. Besides, there are other issues like dangerous buildings awaiting
edevelopment."

On this day in the past, party activists indulged in vandalism, threatened youths and attacked gift shops.
