The slums of Thane are set to get colourful as TMC has joined hands with a Mumbai NGO to paint them. This project is not only aimed to paint the slums but also brighten the attitude of its residents towards cleanliness, hygiene and education.

Last year, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) organised a 'Paint the Wall' project in Thane where the residents came together to paint the walls with their own vision of the city. After the success of this project, the TMC along with NGO Mumbai Misaal have decided to beautify the slums of Thane.

The project will be carried out in phases. The walls of slums of Indiranagar, Parsiknagar and hillock of Dongripada will be painted in beautiful colours on varied themes. "These paintings will speak about the importance of hygiene, good health and education among other social causes," said Sandip Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner, TMC.

The project will be undertaken with the support of local corporators and residents are welcome to come forward to paint the slums. Besides creating awareness through these talking walls, efforts will also be taken to improve the living conditions of the slum residents. Various civic amenities like water supply, solid waste management, clean surroundings will be introduced in these slums.

In December 2016, TMC organised a campaign of painting the walls and beautifying the city wherein residents, resident groups, school students, artists, amateurs came forward and painted every empty wall in the city. In the first phase of the campaign, over 55,000 square feet of walls were painted which included Cadbury service road, wall of Singhania school, pillars of Nitin Junction flyover, Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Pravesh Dwaar (gate), Cadbury company's wall, Kopri circle, walls of Kopri ST bus stand, Kopri bus workshop, Kalwa ST workshop, Kausa auditorium.
