The agency has seized gold bars worth Rs 56 lakh from the duo which they had smuggled in from Kuwait.

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department on Monday, arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling gold into the city. The agency has seized gold bars worth Rs 56 lakh from the duo which they had smuggled in from Kuwait.

The arrested duo, Mohammad Salim Abdul Karim and Khalid Abdul Rehman, has been identified as residents of Jogeshwari.

According to the AIU, on receipt of specific information they intercepted Salim and Khalid. Both had arrived from Kuwait by the Jazeera flight.

"Examination of Khalid's baggage resulted in recovery of gold bars worth Rs 56.18 lakh. Khalid also revealed involvement of his cousin Salim in the smuggling racket. Khalid admitted possession, non-declaration, concealment of the gold bars," said an AIU official.

He added, a search conducted at Khalid's residence resulted in seizure of some incriminating documents pertaining to an AIU case of 2014 involving one Carsten Lund.

"In the said case, Lund had admitted to have smuggled 19 kilogramme of gold on various occasions on the instructions of one Mr Khalid whose address he was not aware of and only had his mobile number. Khalid Abdul Rehman arrested by us now, uses the same mobile number that was provided by Lund in 2014, and possibility of the two individuals being the same person cannot be ruled out," the official said.
