180 of the 480 motormen of the Western Railway Motormen Association went on mass sick leave at 3pm on Friday afternoon, leaving many commuters stranded in Mumbai.
The railways which are the lifeline of the city have stopped as a result of the strike, with motormen refusing to ply local trains.
The motormen have made a few demands saying that they want a weekly off and better safety precautions to be taken.
They also alleged that some seniors were harassing them by forcing motormen when unwell to work.
At Churchgate station, a fight broke out with an angry mob shouting slogans and attacking the motormen. The railway police however, controlled the situation by stepping in.
