App for citizens to help make Mumbai city cleaner

Sharing feedback on cleanliness via app improves a city’s ranking

The application 'Swachhata-MoUD', which can be downloaded from Google Play Store, will help the government evaluate cities on the cleanliness index through active citizen engagement.

If you are concerned with your city's cleanliness or you want your locality to be cleaner, it might be a good idea to download a government-backed mobile app. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will address citizens' complaints registered through the mobile app within 12 hours.

The application 'Swachhata-MoUD', which can be downloaded from Google Play Store, will help the government evaluate cities on the cleanliness index through active citizen engagement.

Under the Swachh Sarvekshan 2019, a national cleanliness survey, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MoHUA), which is conducting the survey, has given 25 per cent weightage to citizens' feedback. If citizens give negative feedback through the app, the city will lose marks, which will affect its overall ranking.

Subhash Dalvi, chief nodal officer, Swachh Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan, said the survey is a participatory programme where citizens' involvement is a must. "Complaints about untidy toilets to irregular waste collection can be registered through the app and will addressed within 12 hours," said Dalvi.

He said there was no need for citizens to visit BMC office to lodge complaints. "The people are the eyes and ears of the civic body. They can tell which parts of the city need to be cleaned," said Dalvi.

Apart from this, citizens can also participate in cleanliness activities through the app. "Residents can register an event like park cleaning or street art with the Swachh App and organise the programme themselves," said Dalvi.
