AQI likely to be 'Very Poor' in Mumbai as mercury levels to dip

Mumbai’s minimum temperature on Saturday dropped to 15.2 degree Celsius

Mumbai, on December 27, recorded 12.4 degree Celsius, which has been the lowest minimum temperature of this winter season- as well as in December since 2016.

Even as weathermen have said that Mumbai is likely to witness a drop in temperatures in the next few days the air quality is only predicted to get worse.

Mumbai's maximum temperature on Saturday dropped to 30.6 degree Celsius while the minimum was 15.2degree Celsius. "Mumbai is beginning to experience northerly coastal winds that will result in temperatures dropping and Mumbaikars can hope for cooler and pleasant days ahead," said an IMD official.

Rajesh Kapadia a private weather forecaster who also runs the popular weather blog Vagaries of Weather said Mumbai will see cooler weather again from January 5 and the cold north winds will make it feel chilly from January 6. Also, there will be a drop in the temperatures at Pune Nasik and Aurangabad.

However, on the flip side, Mumbai's overall air quality remains a cause of concern. According to data of System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) which monitors Air Quality Index (AQI) at 10 stations in Mumbai, the PM 2.5 levels on Saturday was 126µgm-3 making it in the 'Very Poor' category and is predicted to only go higher and is expected to be 135µgm-3 after three days. However, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded as 274 classified as Poor.

Out of the 10 stations, the AQI in five was a matter of concern. The PM 2.5 levels at Malad (365), Andheri (353), Navi Mumbai (302), BKC (356) and Mazgaon (308) was in Very Poor category.
