The area under the Andheri metro station has been illegally occupied by the auto-rickshaw stands and unlicensed hawkers that is creating lot of problems for commuters and the local residents. Despite several complaints from local residents, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) are not ready to take responsibility of the situation.
While BMC officials say that the road is under the authority of MMRDA, MMRDA says that maintaining roads and keeping a check on illegal hawking is the civic body’s responsibility. Residents of the area are still confused about who to complain to for issues related to the stretch between Navrang movie theatre and Andheri railway station.
Talking to iamin, the locals alleged that there were hardly any hawkers around the area before the construction of pillars, but as soon as the pillars for the metro were erected, the hawlkers have literally encroached the whole space making it difficult to walk even.
Mayor Snehal Ambekar speaking to iamin gave an assurance about finding out who is responsible for maintenance of the road and take it further accordingly.
