Lieutenant Commander Abhilash Tomy of the Indian Navy will set on a solo circumnavigation of the globe on INSV Mhadei. The expedition christened as ‘Sagar Parikrama II’ (SPII) will kick starts on November 1st and is expected to last for 180 days, covering around 45,000 kms, Navy officials said.
“During his journey, the officer will not take help from any of the ports falling on the way on his voyage,” the officials added. Tomy is likely to return Mumbai by April-May 2013.
A similar trip was taken earlier by Commander Dilip Dhonte in August 2009 when he sailed solo around the world from Mumbai, passing close to Australia, New Zealand, around the Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope, before finally dropping anchor in Mumbai.
Tomy will follow not only the same route but will conduct his voyage in the same boat, INS Mahadei, that his predecessor had used for his exercise, the officials said.
