Medical services at the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Aurangabad were halted on Monday after the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) went on an indefinite strike to protest against the attack on their two colleagues by the relative of a patient.

The local president and secretary, Dr Kamlakar Mane and Dr Parimal Kore said that about 225 resident doctors went on strike demanding fool-proof security and permanent solution to the problem of frequent attacks on doctors.

According to the striking doctors, a relative of a patient, Bhaginath Hiwale, was insisting for urgent attention by the doctors on duty, Dr Manoj Patil and Dr Saurabh Patil, They asked him to wait for few minutes as they were attending to the more serious patients.

Hiwale lost his temper and bashed up both doctors. The police of the GMCH Chowky rushed to the spot and arrested Hiwale.

The dean and other officials of the GMCH are trying hard to settle the issue but the MARD is not ready to withdraw the strike unless a fool-proof security arrangement is made permanently.
