Here’s a warning to all fish eaters.
The fish you eat has extremely high concentration of chemical residues and it could prove fatal for your health. A new investigative report released on Wednesday by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, has come out with this startling revelation.
The report states that the fishing industry is violating laws, endangering human health and causing animal suffering on a massive scale.
Alarmingly, the report indicates that mercury levels in fish found in Mumbai’s coastal waters are almost twice the permissible level. PETA’s studies on samples have shown that Mumbai and West Bengal are among the most polluted coastlines in the country.
“Mercury level should not be more than 1 particles per million (ppm), but the samples collected from in and around Mumbai show mercury content around 1.78 ppm,” said PETA’s senior campaign coordinator Nikunj Sharma.
PETA’s year-long investigation, revealed facts about fish markets, potentially deadly chemical toxins commonly found in fish, the nature and intelligence of fish, and how the fish suffer from the fishing industry’s routine violation of animal and environmental-protection laws.
“Through the year-long undercover investigation, we have found out terrible flaws in the fishing industry,” said Sharma. “Fish flesh and fish fat can contain extremely high concentrations of chemical residues — as much as nine million times that of the water in which they live — thus eating fish presents a serious health risk.”
