After the tragic spate of building collapses in the city, including the most recent Dockyard incident where 61 people died, the BMC has started conducting structural audits of all buildings across the city by roping in experts.
In fact, the civic body received the structural audit report of its fire brigade staffers’ quarters at Byculla on Saturday morning. “After getting the report, we relocated the 31 fire officers families from A wing of the dilapidated staff quarters to another newly constructed centre,” said a senior civic official.
Civic chief Sitaram Kunte and additional municipal commissioner Manisha Maiskar visited the dilapidated building on Saturday. Kunte told dna, “Mahinde told us that the foundation column was showing signs of distress and the building could collapse any moment.”
Recently, the BMC had shifted people from Shivaji Market building. BMC received a lot of backlash for this decision. “There was even a demand for Kunte and Maiskar’s resignation for their inability in ensuring the protection of their own structures. MNS ran the ‘Kunte Hatav’ campaign on various social media,” sources said.
