Marine Drive was piled with solid waste from the sea on Sunday

As per BMC officials, in the last seven days, around 40 mt tonne of trash has been cleared from Marine Drive, of which the highest- 12 mt tonnes was collected on July 12.

From Thermocol to wrappers and slippers to plastic bags, the angry ocean seems to be sending everything back to city roads that empty tonnes of solid waste daily into the creeks.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, cleared around 11 metric tonne of trash spewed by the sea on Marine Drive. As per BMC officials, in the last seven days, around 40 mt tonne of trash has been cleared from Marine Drive, of which the highest- 12 mt tonnes was collected on July 12.

However, over 200 mt tonne of waste was collected from different beaches and sea fronts across Mumbai. Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner (A ward), BMC said, this year the quantum of waste thrown back by the sea is quite higher than other years.

Around 55 labourers from A and C wards were deployed with machinery for quick completion of task.

"There is dumping of solid waste in drains and rivers of Mumbai and all this directly enters the creek. There is no mechanism to stop trash from entering creeks and it ends up in the sea as well in mangroves and later," said a senior BMC official.
