The proposal will come up for discussion during the general body meeting of BMC this month.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working on a proposal to paint zebra crossing in three-dimensional design to control the vehicular speed at crossroads. The proposal will come up for discussion during the general body meeting of BMC this month.

The purpose of zebra crossing at important junctions is to control the speed of the vehicles and prevent accidents. However, it has been observed that with the rise in the number of vehicles and improved the quality of roads, they are not very effective. Accidents are often reported despite zebra crossing. Dr Saeeda Khan, NCP corporator from Kurla has moved a notice of motion and demanded that all zebra crossing should be painted in three-dimensional design. "It is visible from a distant and motorists can control the speed," said Khan.

A similar effort was taken in Ahmadabad in Gujarat where a three-dimensional design was painted at accident-prone junctions. The result is encouraging as there are no more accidents reported at most junctions.

In December 2017, a person died after two auto-rickshaws collided in Kurla. Both the auto drivers did not notice the speed breaker as it was not painted. "Three-dimensional design has been adopted in many countries and it is quite successful," said Khan.

The three-dimensional design creates an illusion to motorists who think that there are wooden blocks. However, the moment they approach near the crossing, they recognise it as painting. "The design looks three dimensional from distant not from near," said Khan.

However, the proposal will require to get a nod from the general body and then civic chief.
