The BMC started demolishing illegal shanties that have cropped up at the Worli sea face behind Poonam Chamber. There are around 130 structures raised in the last six to seven years. The interesting part is, more than 50 shanties were constructed by one lady, said sources.
There are old shanties in Markandeshwar Nagar which are ready to redevelop in coming years. But all of a sudden, the number of shanties on the seafront increased. They exist from Poonam Chamber to Love Grove outfall. With the help of a land mafia and a lady, these unauthorised structures were raised on around 2 acres of land by filling the seaside.
Devendra Kumar Jain, Assistant Commissioner of G southward initiated action in the case. Worli Police station provided security and demolitions were started. Until now, 32 ground and ground plus one structure have been demolished. Demolition of foundation is also in progress. "There are several complaints from locals. There are chances of washout of these structures during high tides," said Devendra Jain.
