Colleges had marked students absent in environment studies

After students from some city colleges protested against the grading system for environment studies in HSC exams, the Mumbai divisional board has come to their rescue.

With permission from the state board, it has decided to revise their marksheets in case the college had wrongly marked them absent in their project work. Divisional board secretary Basanti Roy said the board was not involved in internal assessment of colleges. “Colleges have wrongly marked grade A as AA, which means absent. This is why many students failed in the subject. We have asked colleges to make the changes and submit new marksheets. The board will provide students with revised marksheet,” she said.

However, there is no respite for students who have scored Grade D, there is no respite. The students will have to approach the board for a re-evaluation. If they are passing after verification, their mark sheets will also be revised, added Roy.

Parents of students from RD National College will file a petition in the Bombay high court today. Shishir Das*, a student of National College, said, “Several colleges asked their students to rewrite the exam as they had not performed well. Since this is an internal exam, why can’t National College do the same?”

On Tuesday, students from other colleges extended support to the protestors. At least 25 students from MMK College, Bandra, joined RD National College students in their protests. Thirty students from Bhavan’s College, Andheri, too joined the protests.

Bahujan Vidyarthi Parishad’s president, Chandrashekhar Kamble said around 3,000 students in the city were affected because of the goof up.
